Volvo S60 Concept

The S60 concept was first shown in 2009 at the Detroit motor show, and is a prelude to the forthcoming S60 production car, recently announced and due at dealers imminently as we write.

The car takes the new styling themes shown on the previous XC60 concept and applies them to the S60 saloon to give a purposeful angular yet fluid design, or according to Steve Mattin: “This car is packed with inspiration from Scandinavian design and from the Swedish coastline’s cliffs and seas. A thrilling blend of drama and sensuality”

Volvo XC60 Concept

The Volvo XC60 concept car was first shown in 2007 as a preview to the forthcoming XC60 production car. The XC60 concept was designed by Steve Mattin, director if design for Volvo. The idea was to take current styling themes seen in cars such as the XC90 and give them more of a dynamic quality, hence a lot more angular fluid lines and trapezoidal shapes and a strongly rising belt line to imbue the concept with a sense of speed.

When the production car arrived, it was very similar to the concept, with reworked front and rear bumpers, smaller wheel arches, and changes to the rear hatch, but overall remarkable similar, which can definitely be seen as a good thing and the XC60 has gone on to be a sale success for the brand.

Volvo T6 Roadster Concept

The T6 roadster is a hotrod that was hand built using Volvo components, and based around the Twin turbo inline 6 cylinder engine newly available in the Volvo production car line up, and in this case taken directly from the S80, as are parts of the suspension and the majority of the interior.

The engine is rear mounted into the tubular steel space frame chassis, with the rear sub frame and brakes also from the S80 saloon.

Volvo YCC Concept

The Volvo YCC Concept car (standing for Your Concept Car) was apparently conceived specifically for the needs of women drivers, and was designed purely by women designers at Volvo.

It is a stylish 4 seat coupe with gullwing doors, and had what were considered women specific features such as having no access to the engine bay, with the car needing servicing only once in every 50,000 km, and run flat tyres so the woman would not have to change a tyre by the roadside.

Volvo 3CC Concept

The 3CC concept was first shown by Volvo in 2004 as a novel way of transporting 3 people, and focused on the aerodynamic properties of having a tapered rear glass section which helped reduce drag therefore helping fuel consumption, and brings the centre of pressure of the car towards the rear making it more stable.

In reality Volvo was never going to produce a 3 seater, but plenty of styling cues in the 3CC were carried over into the Volvo C30 production car released shortly afterwards.

Volvo VCC Concept

The VCC Concept car was developed by Volvo to explore potential future designs for the replacement for the largest estate car in the Volvo range – the V70.

The concept has rear hinged rear passenger doors to allow a huge side opening making getting things into the back seats (like wriggling children) easier, and the concept also has pushed the “squared off” Volvo styling theme as far as it goes, harking back to Volvo design from the 80′s and 90′s, yet with a modern twist. the design never made it to production, but some of the surfacing treatments were seen in the V70 that followed.
